Getting A1 is not an easy feat. Inez’s English result came as a surprise to us… Inez was particularly weak in answering comprehension questions. With EduEdge’s ‘Formula-Style’ of teaching, it helped her a lot in this area… I can see she really enjoys the lessons at EduEdge. Even when she has a lot of school homework, she tries not to skip any classes.
The 4S Answering Strategy helps me a lot in the way I answer comprehension because I was not very strong in language… I find the questions easier to understand… and that makes my life easier because I get what my Cambridge markers want and I know what are the key points I need to put in.
The staff and principal at EduEdge are very dedicated and hardworking teachers and the pupils they taught over the years have performed very well… I heard from my granddaughter and other people that their method of teaching can help students to improve.
I had trouble expressing myself for Oral Speaking and Paper 1 Compositions…The Levels 1 to 7 Comprehension helped me understand what the questions want from me and answer accordingly… (After learning the ‘Formula-Style’ strategies) I find that English is actually not complicated and it is easy but it does take time to understand.
When she has the result of A2 for English, we were all very surprised… she only had a C5 during the prelim… The teachers at EduEdge would always spend extra time talking to her, encouraging her in her work… Getting into the right tuition centre is very important.
Before learning the ‘Formula-Style’ technique, I tried to devise my own technique like what I did for Math and Science. But it just didn’t work out as the school’s answers weren’t consistent… When I joined EduEdge, I discovered that there were consistent techniques that I can apply for all paper components.
We got panicked when she got C6 in school in Secondary Two… English is something whereby we thought since we speak English at home, she should be okay… I was quite impressed when Christel was doing the assessment and Mr Cheng could actually pin-point what are the areas she could improve on. I thought this style (of learning English) is very systematic.
I usually face a lot of problems in writing because I would only get a pass… the exposition module was one of the most important lessons for me as writing expository essays was the core part of the English exam. I’ve learnt how to tackle the different parts of the essay properly and that was really an accomplishment for me.
I find that the lessons at EduEdge are very well-planned… I did not know how to improve in English and I thought the only way to improve is just to read more and widen my vocabulary but that’s not the case… there are structures and methods… The S.C.O.R.E. technique was very useful for structuring Situational Writing essays.
S.C.O.R.E. and ACARPPIE helped me move up my band descriptors while attempting essays…During the O-levels, I used the same template to answer argumentative essays… After applying the ‘Formula-Style’ techniques, I felt like English became more of like a Science to me because after I got the concepts it was quite easy to answer the questions
My challenges in English Language was how to structure a proper answer for reading comprehension… The ‘Levels 1 to 6’ Question Types really gave me an understanding on how to structure my answers… As a result, I felt more confident.
Mr Cheng believes that effective English learning comes from student engagement and interaction during lessons. Thus, he employs a myriad of teaching techniques such as group discussions, presentation, problem solving and games, just to name a few, to help his students learn effectively and also provide them with opportunities to apply the knowledge and skills which have been imparted.
English is no means an easy feat for many students but Mr Cheng demystified the learning of the subject by employing a clear structure and ‘Science’ towards language teaching… His unique Teaching Methodology transformed my perception of English as a dry and dull subject to one that is both relevant and meaningful to the real world.
What really differentiates him from the rest of the teachers was his method of teaching the English Language. He actually “teaches” English. Most of us would say that English is a subject that cannot be taught, learn or even studied – if you can do well means you can do well; if you can’t means you can’t. However, he has discovered and developed a way such that average students, like us, are able to study and revise English like any other subjects like Maths and Science.
Due to the recent changes in English syllabus, I found it hard to understand what was expected from me for each of the different components. Unlike any other English lessons, Mr Cheng’s lessons are always fun-filled and engaging. Through his quirky tips such as SP3OTVCD which was easy to understand, I was now able to conquer any English practices that my teachers gave me.
I expected it to be like any other education centre, where we were constantly drilled with practices. However, it proved otherwise. Due to the change in syllabus, I had difficulty grasping English. Yet, Mr Cheng was able to package and customize each lesson according to our learning needs. Subsequently, I became confident in English and was able to tackle any passage the teachers gave to us. Before I knew it, I was able to score an A1 in my GCE ‘O’ Levels for Junior College admission.
I find the lessons at EduEdge very enriching as the tutors apply an extremely unique way of teaching English in a structured, systematic and scientific way… The tutor never fails to identify our weaknesses we have made in our essays and gives us proper guidance on how to improve for our subsequent writing pieces. I used to have problems with Reading Comprehension but after guidance from the tutors at EduEdge on how to use the S.M.A.R.T. reading technique, I was taught how to apply the necessary steps needed and answer the questions directly.
Until now, I could still vividly remember one lesson when he made use of the lyrics of the song, “Everything at once’’ as a teaching material to keep up-to-date with the new syllabus and it literally got me all excited and open to learning. How creative that is!
Personally, I feel that Mr Edwin Cheng is one of the rare individuals who has made studying fun for me, even for a subject such as English. He is very passionate in teaching the subject and makes a great effort to help us in any way he can. For me, I used to have a big problem with time management in the exams. I tend to spend an excessive amount of time on certain sections and have insufficient time for the rest of the sections. However, by learning the tips and tricks which he imparted, I was able to complete the exam in a breeze with time to spare and double-check my work.
Despite being the first batch to sit for the new English syllabus, with little resources provided by Cambridge, the tutors at EduEdge know their stuff at their fingertips and even create their own resources to maximise our learning. Before starting the lesson, the tutors will share the agenda of the session so that students know what they are learning for that day. In addition, EduEdge’s unique method of planning essays with us, and then demonstrating how our ideas can be improved, is commendable!
Personally, I feel that it is EduEdge’s teaching methods which make their lessons a cut above the rest. The tutors adopt a student-centered learning culture where clear instructions are given for every task. They also make their lessons engaging where every student will have the chance to speak up. This not only makes our learning more productive, it also trains us to be more confident.
One of the most interesting activities that is usually held in the classes at EduEdge are debates. This was one of the activities which I have personally enjoyed the most. Through debates, it broadens my viewpoint and mind-set and I have learnt how to speak confidently and self-assuredly when affirming my standpoint. At the same time, teamwork and collaboration was promoted during group work. Under my tutor’s tutelage, I was able to improve on my public speaking.
I have always known that writing proficiency is a prerequisite to do well in English. However, I had no clue as to how I could improve my writing skills. Mr Cheng guided and showed me exactly how I could spice up my writing with the use of effective dialogues and character description. In particular, I found the technique of applying ‘internal conflict’ to my characters to be extremely effective in sustaining my readers’ interest.
I struggled with English when I first came to Singapore and my marks usually hovered around 50+. I had problems handling the Summary Writing component of Paper 2 because I was not able to pick out the correct points. Mr Cheng showed me exactly how to tackle the summary question using the A.S.A.P technique and since then, I have managed to consistently search and select at least 13 out of the required 15 content points. Undoubtedly, this was instrumental in helping me secure a B3 for my GCE ‘O’ levels. Thank you EduEdge!
What I like about EduEdge is that they don’t just tell students what the right answer is but how to get there instead. Mr Cheng teaches us various techniques and skills and how to tackle the complex questions and what I really like about that is he simplifies the difficulty level of the questions of the questions and I can differentiate more about the questions and I know what exactly is expected from an answer. I’m truly grateful to have met Mr Cheng and Ms Yue as they helped me boost my confidence in the subject and it’s only when I come to EduEdge that I dare to dream of getting an A2.
Mr Cheng and Ms Yue have come up with many strategies to actually help us improve our comprehension. Some of the strategies include the S.M.A.R.T. Reading Strategy, which was basically reading the passage closely and understanding what questions want. We also leveled the questions to understand the difficulty and be able to answer it correctly. I realise that comprehension is actually not difficult at all. I was able excel at comprehension in my preliminary examinations.
I find the English lessons at EduEdge exciting and engaging. Each lesson is prepared diligently to ensure students are not over-fed with information. Language itself has many sub-categories and filled with chunks of details. The tutors break it down for us so that it is applicable to our syllabus. Every lesson has objectives that are written on the top right hand corner of the whiteboard. Significant strategies that have value-added to my learning would be PIVEO and SCORE. This has definitely strengthened my elaboration in my writing.
Their teaching methods are way far better than the teachers that teach us in school. Trust me, their teaching methods are very unique. Instead of just telling us to do and do and do, they use us different techniques and skills to teach us on the different components of the paper. For instance, they taught us how to use the peer and the fact commenter to structure our comp and our situational writing.
Before I joined EduEdge, I was extremely weak in English. It didn’t work out for me even after I joined a well-known tuition centre. After I joined EduEdge, my grades improved tremendously. I learned a lot of useful techniques and acronyms from Ms. Yue and Mr. Cheng.
Before joining EduEdge, I was struggling through many aspects of the English paper. I didn’t know how to fulfill the question requirements and how to plan effectively. However, after enrolling at EduEdge, I’ve learned many techniques and strategies on how to go about tackling the different aspects of the English paper. I recommend EduEdge to students who need to improve their English grades as Mr Cheng and Ms Yue are exceptional and capable English educators.
PIVEO is actually very essential because PIVEO is actually for situation writing and before joining EduEdge, my results as well as my structure and my points were all over the place. So right now after going through the EduEdge IEPC class, I actually managed to better structure and get a better hold of the situational writing.
Before I started attending English tuition at EduEdge, I was constantly faced with remarks of poor grammar by my English teachers at school. When I sat for my school’s preliminary examination for English, I made an attempt to apply the skills which Mr Cheng has imparted me such as FATCOP for writing and A.S.A.P for summary.
What separates Mr Cheng from the rest of the mediocre English teachers are his humour and straight-forward, yet highly effective Teaching Methodology. Mr Cheng lightens the mood of the class by cracking jokes and sharing interesting stories occasionally. In addition, Mr Cheng makes up acronyms to accommodate learning, such as ACARPPIE, PIVEO, FATCOP and so on. This makes learning English so much more interesting and easy to understand.
The friendly tone of the tutors has never failed to impress me and the rest of the other students. The tutors are very passionate with their teaching and have cleared all my doubts with good examples. They are very encouraging too. EduEdge’s Teaching Methodology is totally different from other tuition centres. I can promise you that the strategies and techniques you learn will improve your grades.
It is because in my many years of education, I have never met such an enthusiastic language teacher. On top of that, Mr Cheng teaches us his systematic methods of approaching the various components of the English papers effectively. For example, the SP3OTVCD approach has allowed me to be more conscious when tackling the Language Editing section of Paper One.
The strategies taught by Mr Cheng and Ms Yue were very useful in aiding me. Some useful techniques would be varying my sentence openings in my writing, using SP3OTVCD to eliminate and easily spot the errors in Language Editing and last but not least, the answering strategies for Reading Comprehension. The application of these methods has significantly improved my marks in all components.
